Viva Las Vegas: Get Ready for a Bumpy Ride

Your next trip to Las Vegas may be a little more turbulent that usual - nearly half the air traffic controllers at the city’s McCarran Airport are trainees, according to a new report by the Department of Transportation’s Inspector General.

The problem gets worse at other airports, including Miami International, as more controllers retire and the FAA has trouble recruiting replacements.

The agency’s hiring process “is now outpacing the capabilities of many air traffic facilities to efficiently process and train new hires.”

Although no more than 35% of controllers at airports should be trainees, according to FAA guidelines, the IG discovered that as many as 70% of the facilities nationwide (22% of all air traffic control facilities) exceed that limit.
