Congressmen’s Liaison to Saddam
Lobbied for Iraq’s Top Sunni Party

Muthanna al-Hanooti, the Islamic charity official under federal indictment for helping facilitate three Congressmen’s visits to Saddam Hussein in 2002 has been working as a lobbyist for the coalition of al-Tawafuq, the largest Sunni political party in Iraq.

Among his tasks was helping undermine Shiite leaders in Iraq, such as current and former Prime Ministers Nouri al-Maliki and Ayad Allawi.

Al-Hanooti helped Iraq’s Sunni vice president Tariq al-Hashemi email comments critical of al-Maliki to top administration officials, such as Meghan O’Sullivan, a deputy national security advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan.

In the series of e-mails over the last year, Hashemi, with al-Hanooti’s assistance, wrote that the prime minister could not “control the security situation” and described his government as “weakening.”
