Turning the Page: The Real Che?

He’s the ultimate symbol of radical chic but was Che Guevara really a homophobic, racist square who personally ordered the jailing and executions of innocent men, women and children?

That’s according to Humberto Fontova, the author of “Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him,” who claims that Guevara probably would have imprisoned or punished most of his celebrity fans, from Johnny Depp to Angelina Jolie.

Among the book’s claims:

- Twice, Che plotted terrorist attacks against New York City. In November 1962, the FBI cracked a terrorist plot by Cuban agents who targeted Macy’s, Gimbel’s, Bloomingdale’s and Grand Central Terminal. They planned to blow up those landmarks with 12 incendiary devices and 500 kilos of TNT the day after Thanksgiving. Several months before visiting New York in December 1964 and being feted by the toast of the city’s intelligentsia, Che hatched a plan with the Black Liberation Army to blow up the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell and the Washington Monument. The plotters were infiltrated in 1965 by a sharp-eyed NYPD cadet.

- Che detested rock and roll and railed against “long hairs,” “lazy youths,” and homosexuals. At one point, he wrote that the young must always “listen carefully - and with the utmost respect – to the advice of their elders who held governmental authority.”

 - Che sidelined black Cubans and mocked those who were part of the revolutionary movement. He once told radio host Luis Pons, “We’re going to do for blacks exactly what blacks did for the revolution. By which I mean: nothing.”

- Che personally ordered 700 executions by firing squad, which he supervised at his jungle headquarters in Cuba. He also hosted book burnings, torching thousands of books owned by suspect intellectuals and librarians.

Slightly off-topic, but in re the ubiquitous idiot-badges (aka Che logo merchandise) one sees sported by our little teapot revolutionaries, this passage came to mind:

“Many brands have been developed by people who were brought up on the idealism of the 1960s, post-modernism’s heyday. Entrepreneurs such as Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson and Body Shop’s Anita Roddick bring an emancipatory, anti-corporatist tilt to their business. Modern marketing has consciously co-opted the tools of post-modern “discourse” to sell more stuff. Brands such as Nike explicitly adopt rebellious attitudes in their advertising campaigns. Thus capitalism employs the critique that was designed to destroy it.”

    Keep it up Che lovers!

  31. Don Pedro Says:

Re: Castro kicking Che out of Cuba:

As somebody who`s actually spent a bit of time in Cuba, I can say that the general consensus among non-brainwashed party-member functionary workbots on the island is that Castro orchestrated the leak that exposed Che in Bolivia. And even if this isn`t the whole story, Cubans understand quite well that Che has served more of a purpose as a dead icon to the Cuban “revolution” than he ever did alive.

Cubans also believe that Castro killed Camilo Cienfuegos. Apparently, he had too many of his own opinions — and again, dead revolutionaries serve living tyrants better.

If you see “The Lost City,” with Andy Garcìa, you also see what a tool Che was to the Soviets as well. Anti-imperialist? Whatever.

  32. Wolf Pangloss Says:

The whole scoop is at http://www.therealcuba.com/MurderedbyChe.htm

“To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary…These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. This is a revolution! And a revolutionary must become a cold killing machine motivated by pure hate. We must create the pedagogy of the The Wall! (El Paredón)” –Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara

Ernesto “Che” Guevara dreamed of creating the “New Man” at any cost. During the Cuban missile crisis, he was in favor of a nuclear war because he believed that a better world could be built from the ashes, regardless of the cost in millions of lives. By adhering to his anti-American feelings and pro-Soviet stance, he achieved a role in history that stands for one failure after another, both in Cuba, as well as in all the other countries where he went to promote and disseminate Castro’s Revolution.

About time. I’ve been hearing for decades that the guys who created the most prolific engine of mass justice and wealth creation in human history were completely illegitimate because they were members of a slaveholding oligarchy.

Che was an all-too-common 20th century con artist — the pathological narcissist masquerading as a ‘man of the people’. So, naturally, he became a fetish object for bored, spoiled, useless idiots in the free West. Not only was he ideological charlatan, but he wanted to export the economic immiseration of Cuba to other countries.

Beware of people who’ve never run anything — except their own political campaigns — promising to ‘transform’ or ‘revolutionize’ this country. You’ve been warned . . .

  37. LittleGator Says:

Alex “the clueless” and a couple of the other posters have commented, almost in passing, that Guevara was a medical doctor. That is another myth. Although, I believe Mr. Fontova does not address this one in his well researched book. The fact is that I challenge anyone to find any evidence that Guevara ever graduated from a medical school, or that he was licensed to practice medicine in any jurisdiction. He never did, and he never was. That is just another uninformed leftist myth.

Having, said that, however, even if Guevara was a doctor, what does that prove? That even a doctor can be a cowardly, cruel murderer? I think that goes without saying.

  38. Saul Wall Says:

I would not be surprised if all of the claims in the book were true but I wish that this article had mentioned the credentials of the author. I hope the book is of scholarly quality (references and such) since I have been looking for a well written yet authoritative source for information on Che - something not written by a Marxist historian with a crush on the guy but also not some low quality work that is more interested in selling to people that already hate Che than to exposing a true picture of the guy. If this work is just designed to make Che fans dislike their idol by bringing up hot button issues I would rather leave it to them than pick up “controversial theories” that can easily be refuted even by moonbats. But if the author makes an effort to support all his assertions and only include those that can be documented, I would be very pleased. And in the end, pleasing me is what is really important. ;-)

  39. Jimmy C. Says:

Clearly, this is a bunch of anti-Cuban lies designed to revise history. Che was a great humanitarian who freed opprossed peoples from their bondage. If he were alive today, he would lead a revolutionary force to free the political prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, men and children who are victims of Bush’s imperialism and desire to control persons of color and those who don’t lay at the feet of Jesus.

Even if there is some truth to this, what’s different from Bush’s policy of no gays in the military and Bush’s treatment of the African-Americans who suffered from Katrina? Nothing. Look at the thousands of people who died because of Bush’s hatred of blacks, a lot more than those you alleged to have been killed by Che.

So, let me get this straight. If the murderous, racist, anti-feminist, anti-gay revolutionaries are White and consecrated as the Founding Fathers, it’s all good. But if the murderous, racist, anti-feminist, anti-gay revolutionary is from modern Latin America, his ideas should be comepletely disregarded. Am I missing something other than the stench of euro-centricism? EVERY notable historical figure had a dark-side, we just like to nitpick at the colored ones promoting anything other than American hegemony. Besides, America had its chance to ally itself with Castro AND Ho Chi Minh, but instead they chose to support the colonialists. Thank you America, if it weren’t for your Cold War, Che would never exist!

  50. Decon Says:

By the way, don’t think I’m ignorant of what this man did. I dedicated the better part of my life reading about this man, socialism in general, and other revolutionary movements, just so that I could answer people with confidence and knowledge when they approached me about wearing Che, Zapata, and EZLN’s Marcos on my chest. After much time and thought, I have stopped wearing so many Che shirts, the guy is just too complex to give him any authentic representation in one image.
One very touching memory I have is when a Cuban refugee approached me in a skate park when I was wearing a Che shirt. We sat down and talked for about 30 minutes, and then he shook my hand in appreciation of the thought I had put into wearing a Che shirt. And sure, there are those who will follow blindly, but EVERY movement, society, group, trend, etc. has those. Some people just follow without putting in critical thought, and that’s when we have dictatorships (I think Cubans should have resisted Castro’s dictatorial powers).
Sure he killed, he was ruthless, and maybe not the best strategist, but he gave many Latin Americans an example of what could be done. Sure, he didn’t succeed, but is it ever easy to devise a new way of life? As for those of you talking about M.L.K. and Gandhi, you morons, those were different circumstances. Can you imagine Cubans going on hunger strikes to get Batistsa and all the mobsters and corrupt [American and other] politicians out? They would have shot them! Britain was a crumbling empire when Gandhi did it, America was willing to back Batistsa until the end, and they did! So, before you go around wondering why the hell Che is revered for the rest of your life, I think it was because he was part of an example of how society could take new directions with the help of indigenous roots, and not simply submitting to the imperial powers.
P.S. I also hate those stupid people wearing Che shirts, they just don’t understand the complexity of the man and his place in the larger historical, political, economic, and social forces. I sympathize with that point, but I think if people tried to understand why he did what he did, his actions would make a lot more sense… except for pacifists who don’t realize war is a bloody mess.

  51. MasterWooten Says:

“But if the murderous, racist, anti-feminist, anti-gay revolutionary is from modern Latin America, his ideas should be comepletely disregarded.”

Yes when he’s being held up as the pantheon of liberty, equality and justice, his views towards others, negative are very relevant. When those extolling his virtues want to embrace the “blackman” for example, the blackman needs to be weary of him and others trying to use his plight for their own gains. There’s no point trading one slave master for another, especially when in the case of the revolutionary, this new slave master comes to wipe out, all joy, all privilege any hint deference that one might achieve if at least under different circumstances as a consequence of him putting out a little more effort, and doing so a little more dilligently than the guy next to him.

Winston Churchill once stated, democracy (and by it he meant free market democracy) is a terrible system, but it is much better than all the other systems, by which he was referring to communism, socialism, fascism etc.

Tell you the truth, I’d take living in America or Britain with its free markets than any socialist stae which sees thousnads of its citizens leaving or trying to leave for wealthier capitalist nations. Yes you can be born poor in a capitalist country but your chances of rsiing out of that poverty to a comfortable life are much better than in socialist countries where everyone shares roughly the same level of bare susistance misery. Ever been to Eastern Europe pre 1989? You can have it!

Jon Lee Anderson’s biography of Che is,if you’ll pardon the expression, fair and balanced.I’ve read it cover to cover and parts of it more than once and nowhere within do I detect any reverential bias.If anything,Anderson failed to reinforce many romanticized notions that I had of the man.

It’s true that Guevara presided over many executions at the outset of the Cuban revolution and that the validity of many,if not most of those convictions from a due process and procedural standpoint are highly questionable.History will and has held him accountable for that and at any rate it is certainly understandable(though not excusable)how those things took place given what was happening within Cuba at the time.

Anderson’s book does,i think, mention in passing Che’s homophobia. This definitely constitutes a flaw in moral character but it should be noted that if Che was a homophobe his homophobia was of a decidedly less virulent brand than many men of his generation and cultural background.

I could go on but I’ll just end this by saying that allegations that Che was a racist don’t wash. Many of Che’s closet confidants in the Cuban period were people of color,to say nothing of the fact that the man traveled to the Congo to aid the insurgency there. It should also be noted that Che’s diaries from the period are devoid of racial slurs or otherwise racially derogatory missives.

I haven’t read the book in question but it seems to me that the overwhelming majority of the Cuban anti-Che sentiment always seems to come from the sociopolitical circles of either a) the elites who’s era of treating Cuba as their personal feifdom came to a screeching halt when Castro took over or b)disgruntled former party elites who felt like they didn’t ‘get theirs’ when said deal went down.

  55. Jay Says:

Che was also a product of his time, gay liberation hadn’t really taken off yet, and rock and roll was identified by many of his comrades and himself at the time to be associated with the lewd mafia run pre revolution cuba…

Yeh sure, he executed hundred of people, the number lies between 600 - 700, but they were the ones who committed the worst attrocities under the batista regime…

Not all people are perfect and no fan of Che admires the man because he was homophobic or anti-rock and roll…they admire him because of his renegade guerrila attitude, and his role in getting rid of Batista…

Fair enough i say…not everyone is perfect (btw, many members of the left do have their criticism’s of Che) its a tough call to ask the left to only support pristine movements that are libertarian, egalitarian, feminist, non-homophobic, democratic and the wholesome epitome of equality…

  56. Chris Says:

Ignorance is bliss. It is interesting how everyone here has talked about Che as if they grew up with him. Now I know I could be wrong, but I don’t think a single one of us actually knows who Che is? This is because when history is recorded or passed down through the years it gets skewed. This is a fact, not some trick I am trying to play, because no one can sincerely share anything about a historical event/person without their own agendas or biases effecting it. History is a touchy subject. While we still revere Christopher Columbus for raping and killing thousands of innocent Native Americans, we ridicule Che for executing hundred’s murderers and being homophobic. However, is it not true that Christopher Columbus represents exploration and discovery, while Che represents change and bravery? Perhaps it is time we give the children of America another day off school in order to celebrate another murder, or at least what he represents. Or better yet, maybe we can be fair and equal minded and stop the immature name-calling and agree to disagree. But if you are going to be stubborn why don’t we just combine forces to get that idiotic, homophobic, murdering, manic out of political office, or if you disagree, join the military…I hear they are in short supply of mindless murderers

  57. lizzie89 Says:

I’m going to check on the validity of the first three claims, but based on the documentary “El Che - Investigating a Legend” (1998), the 700 executions Che presided over at his “jungle headquarters” (really the prison in Santa Clara, to which he was apponted director) were of supporters of Fulgencio Bastista. The killings of military dictator Batista and his followers were sanctioned by the new Castro government, and it is true that Che believed that “revolutionary justice is true justice,” but the slant of Fontova’s book is obvious by the title. “Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him”? Now that’s objectivity for you.

  58. lizzie89 Says:

Also, the photo of Che at the top of the page was made after he underwent an image change before going undercover to aid in the Congolese Revolution.

  59. General Raillovski Says:

All you conservative fucktards are just mad that you don’t have a great man who died selflessly for a cause like we communists do in Che. I’m sorry that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and George W Bush are too damn concerned with making enough money for their own personal gains (whether it be through the facade of religion or “America!”), but unfortunately for you, they do not count as “martyrs”. They only count as dirty, selfish, greedy capitalist assholes, just like I’m sure you all are. I’ll bet its nice to not have to think when you’ve got cell phones so the government you love so much can track your every move and Fox News Channel to bring you your daily dose of “Fair and Balanced” brainwashing.
THE REVOLUTION WILL BEGIN SOONER THAN YOU THINK! Don’t try to kid yourselves. You’d better think about leaving now, because once we take over, we will be as ruthless as Che was to his adversaries.

  60. sapo Says:

Chris and Jay, thanks for bringing up the historical relevance of the man.
the image of the man has morphed through time to be the ideal of the man, and with that ideal must come the ideals of the current times. so now, in order to still be an ideologue, Che must be total PC, according to todays terms. in 1900, being racist was not a bad thing. in 1800, being a salve owner was not a bad thing. in 1700, being a chauvinist was not a bad thing. and it could go on.
i think the last thing che would want, based on his writings, is to be plastered all over t-shirts and hats like some cheap Nike brand. the ones who are purchasing those shirts are betraying his words. if you really want to support him, give your money to an organization that is indigenous-led and aiming to bring its own people out of poverty and oppression. better yet, volunteer your time to HELP (not lead) them.
as for all of these comments about what he did or did not do…well, it’s easy to say he did good or bad things without having to cite any of it. for example, Wolf Pangloss, where does this quote “El Paredon” come from?
Little Gator, I like your challenge. check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che_Guevara#cnote_Diploma
seems he did attend medical school, but not completing the clinical residency afterwards only was given the title “medic.” the school has no record of it, but it goes on to say they may have been destroyed. i have seen pictures of che in medical school, for example in Taibo’s book.
I spent about 6 months in Cuba as a student and i got the same impression already mentioned that Castro asked Che to go to Bolivia and then pulled the plug on him. I think this was after Che’s speech at the UN.
I will have to say that I believe Castro is still a racist. If you look at the Cuban government, you will not find many darker-skinned Cubans in positions of power. Based on that premise, it wouldn’t surprise me if Che was also racist. However, he did go to Angola to fight for Africans. Whether his intentions were for personal fame, idealogic validation, or genuine empathy of the Angolan people and people anywhere oppressed, is hard to say.
In many of his writings he talks about the guiding force of love for people that is required for authentic revolution. Either he followed this principal and most of the claims here are inaccurate, or he did not, making him a hypocrite. My personal opinion, not based in fact, is that he, as most people do, tried to follow this principal, but fell short occasionally.

I don’t think che was a racist because africa was the second place he went to help liberate from colonialism, so that claim is hogwash. There is no proof that he disliked homosexuals. He did execute most of the corrupt ex-members of cuba ruling elite regime for repressing the poor classes. I for one share his disdain for class boundries. I support the working poor who really built this nation, so for me I will always love this man. At least che had backbone and died for his beliefs. How many of our leaders of this great nation do the same for the underclass ?

  62. Lefty Says:

I’m a leftist, libertarian, democrat. ;) Ie. my politics are all over the place *except* neo-moronic-fascist-right. Folks who idolize Che see him as an antiestablishment symbol who looks good on a T-Shirt. Which he does. Most people know squat about anything, left right or middle. So, ensure you also poo-poo all over the right-wingers who wear the US flag for a similar fashionable reason (ie. they know little about what it truly symbolizes). Or the weirdos who wear a bit too much camoflage because it is “fashionable”, etc.

Hitler shirts? That would be for fascist right-wingers not liberals. Mao? A genius who also killed a lot of people with bad policy. Osama? Please. Osama is the enemy of everyone. Well, *now* he is. Awhile back he was our ally. How oddly the world turns.

To summarize: you all love to insult, but make sure you look both ways crossing that street. Misunderstood ideology as fashion is coming from all directions.

  64. Tara Says:

He was only human and he probably wasn’t perfect. But sometimes all is fair in war and love. He was so passionate about the revolution that he managed to neglect his own children. At least he fought for what he believed in. Stop talking about him like you know him, I have met Alberto Korda the photographer who took a famous photo of Che and many more photos that world has not seen and spend years in his company. He said that he was a man of principles and he stood on a high moral ground i.e. he lived as he preached. I tend to believe him rather than people who never met him yet they write books on him without any valid proof of what they are saying. If he was such a racist what was he doing in Congo? Please use your head… it’s good to question everything but educate yourselves before you jump into any conclusion.

“The plotters were infiltrated in 1965 by a sharp-eyed NYPD cadet”

How can any read that and take the account of that “plot” as anything but propagnda?

I’m not swayed by pro-Che propangda a bit either. I came to this story while searching for images for my own Che T-shirt parody design. But come on, a “sharp-eyed cadet”? Blowing up the Statue of Liberty? From FBI files that date back to 1962?

Anyone who takes any old 1962 FBI file at face value, from the era when Hoover was bugging MLK while prancing around his office in a TuTu, no less, is a fool. I’m sure Hoover knew all of those public bathroom, foot tapping code signals too, is his office also the primary source on who was “homophobic” and who wasn’t in that era?

Any author who would include that “plot” as a center piece or selling/bullet point of his work is quite obviously intellectually dishonest, and a propagandist.

Anyone seen the reports of who some of the “sharp-eyed cadets” of today have been sent to infilitrate by Homeland Defense? I’ll give you a hint, it’s your coffee clutch.

  68. tooleftforyou Says:

Che might have been homophobic, a racist and executioner, but how does that make the left bad? All it says to me, is that Che was not the ideal leftist. But then again right-wing logic is hard to follow, if you can call it logic at all. Let me guess, some smartass is going to say that all those posts are not attacking left wing ideology in an effort to strawman me. Spare me. BTW, since when is homophobia a crime to the right? I seem to remember a gay marriage issue in this country not too long ago, maybe you can remind me how that turned out. Let’s face it, leftists don’t even need to make excuses for their icons, they represent a truly admirable ideology, whatever their shortcomings might have been. On the other hand, conservatives are constantly in need of a new excuse for their choice of political system, because deep down inside they know it is in conflict with their morals. Sure, Russia’s attempt at communism wasn’t convincing and you can call that an argument, just like you can call firing millions of people and hiring them back at lower wages creating new jobs. In fact, it is just an excuse for betraying one’s morals and fellow men and choosing conformity. Conservatives are masters at creating new realities just to generate their excuses. MasterWooten above asked whether Decon had been to pre 1989 eastern Europe. This is a great example of a person living in a manufactured reality. Maybe he should ask the thousands of women who were exploited as prostitutes post 1989 what their opinion is, or the store owners paying protection to the mob. For Pete’s sake, just read a post 1989 newspaper, we are the one’s accusing Russia of not having a true democracy in the first place! But then that is the conservative’s next excuse, right? I really don’t need to attack conservatives on the basis of their intellect or missinformation. If anything, those would be extenuating factors to my real beef with them, which is a moral one. Admit it, you are house-niggers. I’m pretty sure they also had good excuses. The funny thing is that most conservatives are proud of it. Perhaps a conservative will read this post and rush to attack the left or specifically a left wing personality on the basis of their morals. Shed the defense mechanism. Two bads don’t make a good. The only cure for conformity is non-conformity. So next time you see that dumbass long-hair wearing a t-shirt you don’t like, ask yourself whether your contempt has less to do with his/her stupidity and more to do with someone dumber than you being morally superior to you.

  69. Revolution Says:

It’s funny, how this article names Che a ‘homophobic, racist square,’ but what do we call our own government? Sure, the constitution boasts their freedom of religion, but will we see any future muslim leaders in our country? Will any asians, blacks, any racially/ethnically/religiously different people ever become president? No. You see, our country is about as racist as any Bush-loving swine, much like Humberto Fontova.

Not only did the bloated, right-wing freak exploit the wrongdoings of Che Guevara, he didn’t even mention the things he did for Cuba and other Latin-American countries. He brought about a revolution, crushed the evil government - if you could call it a government - that controlled Cuba. He freed a country. And, besides, it was mainly Castro who ordered the executions. Yes, it was wrong. But Che was not a coward. He was a brave man, who made very grave mistakes, but mistakes none the less. He didn’t take pleasure in the deaths of the regime he killed - but he realized it was a horrible thing he did. He believed in a purest form of human being and reality. What he did - the killings - is that much different than Bush’s false claims of ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ to reconstitute the war in Iraq? Is it?

  70. Revolution Says:

One more thing - even if Che was against homosexuals - which, I’m sure, he wasn’t - that shouldn’t be overexploited by America, no less. Homosexual marriage is banned in most states, and it is detested, hated by over 90 percent of the American population.

So tell me this. Are his wrongdoings much different than ours in America? Killing - without fair trial or need - the Muslims?

  71. brody Says:

This is all a bunch of propgaganda from the US goverment, they don’t like cuba (you can’t even travel there for fucks sake) and the CIA executed che! And saying that he would have executed angelina jolie and jhonny Dep is jsut to get the public anrgy at him because they know that a lot of people love those actors. Jesus how low has society gone? We live in an illusion of a great country where only work exists, where the goverment controls everything, where the schools teach lies, where the government tries to unite religion and the polotics… Where we wage pointless wars to gain oil which will only worsen global warming but what do the fat cats in washington care? They make lal the profits its our generations problem! JOIN THE REVOLUTION! And saying that che was a homophobe and using it against him is ironic since George Bush our oh so great causer of problems in the world is against gays, well fuck you america. One day we wil over throw this opressing power that we call democracy some day we shall overcome! WE SHALL OVERCOME! JOIN THE REVOLUTION OR DIE!!!

  72. Viva La Revolucion Says:

The US Government has killed, imprisoned, and tortured more people than Che or any revolutionary (with the exception of Stalin and Mao, but neither one of them was a revolutionary after taking control) combined. Che, had to kill the political enemies of the new Cuba or they would kill them. Plus, during Che’s attempted revolution in Bolivia, Che healed his wounded enemies. Che wasn’t perfect, but he brilliant and a great man.
    VIVA LA REVOLUCION!
    HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE!

  74. Gerd Curley Says:

Yeah, the last comment was right. US AND BRIT propaganda. I read comments about him being a murderous bigot etc etc….check out who REALLY are the biggest murderers in the world now…Bush, Blair and Gordon Browne et al.

This same thing happened in my country, Ireland…our leader, Gerry Adams was called a murderer, child abuser, serial killer by the Brits, yet everyone knew on the streets he was a gentle giant, with a son, and now grand child(ren), a family man, a poet, and author, a peacemaker, a revolutionary…BUT, people in Britain who read the Brit and US propaganda ONLY seen him through the eyes of the Sun & Daily Mirror and Telegraph etc etc as a MURDERER….hope this cleans it up…by the way, Ché and his comrades have made the blueprint for what is now the worlds best education and healthcare system in the world, FACT! 76. AQ Says:

I agree with you Gred. These other people are just listening to US propaganda. The CIA were the one who killed Che.

  77. Pablo Says:

Humberto Fontova is obviously an ardent Bush supporter and Bush, apart from anything, is an evangelical racist and incredibly homophobic. The lies and propaganda against Che is quite incredible as he sought to overthrow the violent, corrupt, repressive regime of Batista in Cuba and others around the world. In Cuba he liberated many minorities like blacks and gays.

As for being violent, the only way to bring down a violent dictator is with a revolution of violence and Che knew the only way the achieve this revolution is to be ruthless.

All you American hypocrites should learn about what you hate before you hate it. Try reading something different apart from the American nationalist propaganda you are fed every once in a while…

  78. Meaghan Says:

This is bullshit. Che Guevara freed the people of Cuba from Cuban elitists like Batista. Cuba is still under attack and an illegal blockade by the exremely racist and homophobic president George Bush. You wanna know homophobic and racist, do a little more homework on your beloved Hitler wanna-be, Mr. Bush.

  79. Victoria Lucas Says:

this i believe is a load of crap, how come, no names are mentioned in any of this, or refrencing as to were they got their information from, cause it is all from out of their (you know what!), if che hated blacks so much why in gods name would he go and risk his life by attempting to start a revolution in africa to free the blacks from being
    oppressed.
i’m sorry but this is all lies, there is little to know truth in all of this, he has long hair so how could he say he hated people with long hair.
the person who wrote this has got to be the most unintelligent person any one has ever seen.
gather information from more than one source. (the person who wrote this has obviously only read “Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him” or he would know
the “real” truth about Erntesto “che” Guevara De La Serna ) you moron!!!

  80. robert grayson Says:

when your fighting in war there’s always going to be deaths… to be called a murderer for acts of revolutionary combat is beyond me. To be compared with hitler is without its merit. The whole world knows what hitler did, why? Because of a wee little thing called proof! Most of what i have read hear is anti communism poppycock! propaganda at its worse. The racist part was just so expected, how can you discredit a person who appeals to the younger, open minded people?????? by trying to pass him off as a nazi, a racist and a selfish coward, everything his followers stand up against. The reason these people and myself are in awe of che is because we know in our hearts that he is a fighter for the poor. It will take more than the CIA and propaganda to kill this man because as his daughter said “when men are able influence so many others through their life and their example, they do not die”… viva la che!

  81. Luis Javier Says:

    Humberto Fontova is an idiot

There are no sources no proof just come idiot who didnt want to share what he had and decided to mock a true hero who fought for the poor and died believing that we all could have a better life…this guys Cuban probably one of those rich ones who dont give a shit about the poor

  82. robert grayson Says:

yeah he was most probably cuban, one of those who’s parents thought they had it so sweet until some bearded men with long hair but a stop to that! hahaha u gotta love anything and anyone who spits in the face yankee imperialism….

  83. Maria Teresa Says:

I believe this is true. I think that people who are born, raised and live in democratic countries and have never lived in comunism really can’t understand the true message of these people (che, fidel castro, etc). They destroy economies, societies, and ultimately their own countries, so how can they call themselves patriots> ? they are nothing but dictators disguised as leaders of the people who as soon as take a little taste of power become a country’s worst nightmare.. so i think that all those people who support this ideas should move to places that have this kind of governments and then see if they still support ideas such as ” patria socialismo o muerte” trust me, it is not a very fulfilling life people lead under this tirany…

  84. dype Says:

maria, you are partly right to say that people don’t understand how it feels to live in such countries under such leaders, but people are too selfish. Fidel isn’t exactly a good leader, but Che’s movement had this authenticity of human nature for the betterment of society, positively affecting the economy. But people just want personal gain and want to live in fucked up countries (u.s.) with easy lives and debt-filled economies going into recession. No one wants to make things right or to sacrifice as Che did. He wanted people to genuinely give their time for the greater good and equality. Sure he wasn’t perfect, but who is?

  85. James Connolly Says:

Seriously people, this article is so far off the mark that I can’t believe you actually posted it. It may feel good to marginalize and patronize all left-leaning individuals as morons but you know better. Guevara was a very brave and idealistic man. He had faults I’m sure but don’t degrade yourself by posting this right-wing nonsense. I never wore the t shirt but I admire the man’s ideas.

  86. Magnus la Cour Says:

Do not believe in that shit! Many black people were combatants during the revolution. Che would never say like that about another race. It would be totally against his ideals. If he had a problem with black people, he wouldn’t go to Congo afterwards to try to start a revolution there. There are many who critizices Che Guevara. But if you compare all the critics you’ll see that it doesn’t make any sence. We need to hold on to what we know is true. And that is that Cuba has got some of the best doctors in the world, free education for everyone, free hospitals for everyone. Cuba is the only country in Latinamerica where you DO NOT find people living on the streets. Everybody has got a place to live and food on their table. Che Guevara played an important role in developing this society.

  87. Miranda Says:

The point is though is that Guevera wanted to desperately unite the countries of South America.
I wouldnt at all be surprised if he wanted to bomb department stores in New York City. Look what North American indulgances have done to less fortunate countries. Sweat shops.
Some people may disagree with communism and so do I, but he wanted to at least bring equity into South American countries because he discovered how unfair it really was for alot of people when you looked closely enough.
He had amazing idealistic ideas, however some nations look on them differently.
It depends on whose story you hear it from about him.
Most Americans have an ignorant point of view on things, politics especially, so I wouldn’t be surprised if alot of them had written negative things about him.

  88. Tom Says:

A lot of the leftists commenting seem to have made a lot of judgements which arguably are based as much on left-wing propaganda as the ‘fascists’ they loath. I most certainly am a socialist. But I believe that Che was a bad man. Many people would tell me that these two statements are contradictory, however i think it is stupid supporting a man who was corrupt, and abused a great ideal. There is proof of Che’s murderous acts, his ‘death camps’ in Cuba maybe…?! Robert Grayson seems to think these allegations are all to do with the revolution period, but Che actually sent many peolpe to death after the revolution was declared over. You can abuse Humberto Fontova all you want, and yes he IS definitely biased, but aren’t we all? I’m sure this was escalated by the US administration, as everything is, but supporting Che is like supporting Mao, supporting someone who advocated killing and didn’t even create a Communist state. Cuba may call itself commie (why America hates it) but there’s no equality… Castro is one wealthy man, hardly a ‘great communist leader’.

  89. ei phyu Says:

anyway, i admire, respect & love Che whole of my life.

  90. JOSE Says:

ALOT OF YOU IDIOTS NEED TO REALLY STUDY BEFORE TALKING ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST INTELLIGENT REVOLUTIONIST OF OUR TIMES. CHE GAVE UP HIS WHOLE LIFE TO FIGHT IN THE CUBAN REVOLUTION. HE LEFT CUBA BECAUSE HE DIDNT AGREE WITH THE WAY FIDEL WANTED TO RUN THE CUBAN GOVERNMENT. HE GAVE HIS LIFE TO HELP ALOT OF PEOPLE. SO DO A LITTLE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH

You don’t have be a raving lefty, an ingnorant righty, a christian, a jew, a capitalist, a socialist, an intellectual or a bum to work this out. Let yourself go, you are cutting off the blood supply to your head….if Che killed in the name of freedom he’s still a murderer. For god’s (or your personal religious deity’s) sake, stop trying to convert one-another and get on with life…..children…….

  96. Jovana Says:

Che was a man with a big heart, wanting equality for all the poor in South America. He was a key figure and always will be in Latin American history. Fidel once quoted that Che started the revolution with no intention of surviving it. He dedicated his life in what he believed in.
Che wanting to bomb the Americans and such is not a suprise what so ever. We all know that the U.S has brought enough conflict, and friction into countries they have no need to be associated with. The majority of the world hates the United States for messing into their business and this does not come as a suprise.. at ALL!!!!

i totally agree with Jose. Che was an EXTREMELY intelligent man and some research should be done by those who read the information above and call him a murderer. That is pure nonsense.

+ Also in 1964 Che spoke out against the South African regime of Apartheid, in favor of Mandela, and against American racism. Before the UN in NY he also speaks out in favor of black musician Paul Robeson and upon visiting NY meets with associates of Malcolm X. Malcolm X sends him a note calling him “a true revolutionary” etc.

Decades later when Mandela is released he states:

“Che’s life is an inspiration for every human being who loves freedom. We will always honor his memory.”

Now these countries which have the capability to feed the poor have wide spread famine and poverty. The US backed government only screw its people and quell any uprising with US pantent weapons and military training. This guy is obviously one of their cronnies who wish to besmirch a man who fought against an evil and brutal corporate enemy. Actually, Che DIDN’T like black people. In fact, he often disparaged and berated them. He claims that they couldn’t fight, but the Black men who fought against the Communits *not a typo, folks* in Congo fought VERY well.

Further, Che was an avid book-burner. Unlike the Nazi book burning, where Goebbels burned only a few authors *mostly Jewish* such as Einstein, while telling the Germans what was IN the books being burned, Che’s book burning destroyed ENTIRE libraries with the goal of making sure NO ONE knew what was actually in the books being burned. Further, the Nazi book burning was a theatrical rabble-rousing stunt. Che’s book burning was to hide so much of the truth about him and his Communit (again, NOT a typo)cronies.

Also, if Fontova is “biased,” then he has every right to be. His family was driven out of Cuba for simply trying to keep what little they actually had. Most of Cuba’s sugar plantations and farms were smallholdings owned by CUBANS or NON-American firms.

Che was not the first to use “the blackman” for his cause and then spit at him when it was discovered that “the blackman” just wanted to live like everyone else and not tie his entire life to a wayout ideology and or cause.

It’s not the man people love, it’s the idea that Che stood for. Or at least, that iconic face on all the t-shirts. Whatever Che did, kill/bomb/torture, that point is moot. It’s the core ideology (looking past communism and leftist propaganda and what not) that people believe in. I don’t get offended when I see people wearing a Che shirt who don’t know who he is. The image means nothing to them, but it means something to me, the person looking at it.
