The Latest DOJ Document Dump:
Charlton’s Pique, Cummins’ Angry Wife

Some more nuggets from the Justice Department’s latest document dump on Friday night:

- Fired Arizona US Attorney Paul Charlton was concerned that his desire to start a pilot project to tape confessions (the USAO had been taking notes by paper and pencil) was being ignored. In a May 8, 2006 letter to acting associate AG Bill Mercer, he outlines his thoughts, concluding with the prescient observation:

“I am convinced that it is something that we in our old age, will be proud to have been a part of.”

- Although fired Arkansas US Attorney Bud Cummins was a loyal soldier, falling on his sword for the administration, his wife Jody wasn’t so compliant. In a letter to Michael Battle, who ran the Executive Office of US Attorneys, Cummins cautions him about the growing stink over the firings and reassuring him of his pledge to keep quiet:

“I just wanted to let you know that a) there may be some stink about this down the road; and b) I absolutely did not instigate or provoke it… Anyway just a heads up for you in case somebody starts a squabble over this. I don’t want it coming back on me, especially by someone in DC thinking I am organizing a protest because I am not (I did have to strike a bargain with Jody to keep her mouth shut over this, but as far as I know, she is not talking about it either!)”
