The Wake-Up Call

Scandal Sheet
OK, so I was off in my prediction that Gonzales would resign last Friday (and that Bloomberg would marry his longtime girlfriend Diana Taylor in preparation for a presidential run). For now, I’ll just pass along the speculation that embattled Congressman Rick Renzi will step down today in the wake of a federal investigation into his involvement in a land swap deal and FBI raids of his wife’s insurance agency.

Yet another arrow thrown at Scott Bloch, the chief of the Office of Special Counsel who’s looking into potential Hatch Act violations at the GSA and the White House: He’s been accused of hiring too many Catholics. (Only Bob Novak, who converted from Judaism to Catholicism years ago, would unearth that nugget.)

It may be a little too late at this point in the game, but Bill Frist can finally run for president! The former Senate majority leader is off the hook as federal prosecutors closed their investigation into whether he engaged in insider trading for his sales of stock in a family-owned chain of hospitals.

National Security
Disturbing video that purports to show U.S. border patrol agent Nicholas Corbett shooting Ramiro Gamez Acosta in the chest with a M-4 carbine, killing the Mexican immigrant.

Spy vs. Spy
Is there a double standard at the CIA when it comes to using sex in the service of secrets? Some female agents claim that they’ve been punished for cozying up to foreigners while their male counterparts in such relationships get away with it.

Amazing but true: How the CIA used a fake science fiction film to sneak six Americans out of revolutionary Iran in 1979. They rescued them by creating a fake Hollywood production company and pretending to be in Iran scouting locations for their “movie.”
