On the Docket
It’s time for another new feature, in which we head into the bowels of New York’s State Supreme Court and pull random complaints.
Showroom Seven vs. Rachel Roy and Damon Dash
Summary: The fashion showroom is suing Jay-Z’s former business partner Damon Dash and his wife, designer Rachel Roy, for $148,505.52 plus damages.
The Dispute: Showroom Seven and Rachel Roy signed a one-year sales agreement on January 12, 2006, providing that the designer would show her products in their studio space. A month later, Damon Dash came to the space, demanding that his wife’s fashion line be displayed separately from other designers. Then some of Dash’s employees showed up and took Roy’s wares and refused to return them.
In April, Dash showed up “unannounced and uninvited” to Showroom Seven’s offices and tried luring some wholesale buyers over to his headquarters to look at Roy’s fashion line, which they declined. On April 4, Dash said he’d like to manage sales of Roy’s clothes out of his office and promised to pay them “every dime” to which they were entitled under the contract.
Showroom Seven claims that they generated over $950,000 of sales of Roy’s products but that they haven’t been paid $142,505.52 in commissions.
The Long and Short of It: In his clumsy way, Damon Dash wants to run every aspect of his wife’s business. (Or he’s a loyal husband who sticks up for his wife.)
