Atlantic Yards: A Bird’s Eye View

Some of those protesting Bruce Ratner’s Atlantic Yards proposal have come up with a clever use of Google Maps to make their argument that the development would irreparably destroy the character of a unique neighborhood.

The map shows the plan’s potential impact on Prospect Heights, along with photos of surrounding streets and intersections and some links to related sites. The group does the same thing with a fascinating map of the new Yankee Stadium proposal.

What’s In Our Soil? It’s Not Just Dirt

It gets a little technical, but take the time to read this report, which tracks the levels of nutrients - and their sources from fertilizer to manure - in our soil: County-Level Estimates of Nutrient Inputs to the Land Surface of the Conterminous United States, 1982–2001.

“For nitrogen, the largest source was farm fertilizer; for phosphorus, the largest sources were farm fertilizer and livestock manure. Nutrient inputs from fertilizer use in nonfarm areas, while locally important, were an order of magnitude smaller than inputs from other sources. Nutrient inputs from all sources increased between 1987 and 1997, but the relative proportions of nutrients from each source were constant.” (Thanks to ResourceShelf’s DocuTicker.)
