Katrina Contract Watch, Chapter Two
Last month, we reported on some of the insiders whose companies seem to be benefitting from the billion-dollar reconstruction effort underway in Louisiana and Mississippi. (Katrina Contracts: Corruption?)
We spent the last few days doing an update on that report. And here are those individuals whose numbers have been revised:
Joe Allbaugh (former FEMA director)
- $401 million (Shaw Group; latest contracts on 2/26/06 for $5.15 and 6.45 million, respectively)
Rosemary Barbour (Miss. governor Haley Barbour’s nephew’s wife)
- $6.78 million (Alcatec LLC; latest contract on 2/28/06 for $86,646 to install portable toilet units)
Dan Packer (chair of Bring New Orleans Back)
- $793,400 (Entergy - electric services to EPA and GSA; latest contract on 2/10/06 for $722,400)
(Our methodology: We compiled a list of 75 individuals who are either top government officials or involved in state and federal recovery organizations and agencies, talllied the private corporations and nonprofit groups affiliated with each of those people, and then ran that list through federal databases listing contracts awarded for Katrina reconstruction efforts since September 2005. Note that this list does not include contracts awarded by the Department of Defense.)
